Digital transformation is the adoption of digital technology by an organisation to automate services or operations and digitise products. The main goal of any digital transformation project is to add value usually enhancing customer experience, through efficiencies gained by technology implementation, or the development of new business models and ways of interacting with customers.

Although digital transformation projects have been in the corporate agendas for several years, success rates of such projects are relatively small with most of them failing. Studies indicate that the rate of digital transformations failing to meet their original objectives ranges from 70% to 95%, with an average at 87.5%.

From our experience digital transformation projects fail in the first place because

  • Technology is just an enabler - organisations start their journey without clear objectives in mind; for example, what exactly they are trying to achieve by embarking in embedding technology in their operations and processes.
  • No clear change management strategy - whether it is a new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or a large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, organisations need to have a clear strategy in place from the outset on how the day-to-day operations will change by the implementation of new technology.
  • Resistance to change - employees quite often trust and feel more comfortable with processes and systems that they know and have been using for several years. Provision of sufficient and ongoing training on any new technology and system is crucial to maximise adoption and use of it and therefore maximising ROI.
  • Very ambitious timescales - sometimes organisations plan for accelerated implementation timelines for new technologies and systems without considering the critical technical steps required to switch from one system to the next and the necessary experience that employees need to gain for its appropriate adoption.

Our digital transformation framework allows any organisation to review internal and external factors of their operations and design actions and implementation plans in order to achieve their objectives and anticipated Return on Investment from their investment in technology. The six aspects of our framework are shown below.

  • Vision

Across this theme objectives for the digital transformation project are captured:

    • Are there clear goals for the digital transformation project?
    • What are the challenges or opportunities the organisation is trying to address?
    • What will success look like?
  • Strategy

Across this theme the organisation's strategic themes for the digital transformation project are explored,

    • Is there a prepared strategy describing how to achieve the project's declared goals?
    • Is it clear how to execute this strategy?
    • Are the areas of the business affected by the project well defined?
    • Is the investment for the digital transformation project secured and well understood?
  • Processes

Across this theme internal processes that will be reviewed and re-designed are considered,

    • How are current processes being delivered?
    • Are current bottlenecks and process inefficiencies well understood?
    • How can automation and technology alleviate these challenges?
  • Technology

Across this theme potential technologies and software solutions are considered,

    • What technologies can alleviate identified challenges and bottlenecks in processes and help achieve the specific goals of the digital transformation project?
    • What software solutions and vendors can support the digital transformation project?
    • Has a specification document been developed and all desired features for technology evaluation captured?
  • People

Across this theme people and organisation structures will be considered,

    • What changes in the organisational structure are necessary to support the digital transformation project's goals and objectives?
    • How these new or amended organisational structures enhance the implementation of new processes and business models?
    • What training is required for employees to fully engage with new processes and technology?

  • Benefits

Across this theme the specific benefits for the organisation through the digital transformation project are captured,

    • What specific benefits are expected and desired? (e.g. enhancement of customer experience, increase of operational efficiencies, reduction of cost, etc.)
    • What Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) do we need to define to track progress?
